With its heavily Belgian influence and artsy decor, Moules A Go-Go is completely unique to Chester. After 17 years on The Rows, it’s moved to Cuppin St and undergone an amazing rebranding giving the family run restaurant a more homely, personal vibe. With a decor too intricate to replicate, we caught up with Cameron to find out how it’s getting on…

So how did Moules A Go-Go get started?

We’re a family run business, so my dad started it up in 1999 and all my family have worked together in running it. My dad was travelling with his business partners around Europe, and came across a restaurant called Belgo, that’s where the inspiration came from. I’ve worked here for 8 years now, my brother works here and my mum and aunty help out when they can.

When is the busiest time for you?

Friday and Saturday nights are obviously busier for us, but we do get busy on Wednesdays as we have our ‘Wine on Wednesday’ offer, so it’s 2 courses and a full bottle of wine each for £19.95pp which is a really great deal. Most people don’t believe us when they both get a full bottle of wine.

Best dish on the menu?

People come to us for our mussels, they are probably our most popular dish. We source them from Anglesey, so we really do value that they are locally and sustainably sourced. At the moment I’m trying to get our customers to try our Asian inspired sauces with the mussels, so we have Thai Green and KimChi and they’re great. But if I had to pick something else, I’d choose the Korean fried chicken burger or the Seabass.

Do the menus change regularly?

We do try to change it every 2 months to keep up with the seasonal changes. But if something on the menu is popular, we’ll keep it there.

Who’s been your most famous customer?

Xabi Alonso has been in before with his wife, we’ve also had Ronnie O’Sullivan in. In fact Ian Rush was quite a good customer for a few years.

What other deals and events have you got on at the minute?

On Monday’s we do our 2 for 1 Kilo Mussel pots which are really popular. We also do Wine Tasting evenings every so often, so you try around 5 or 6 different wines depending on the theme of the evening and get 2 courses for £25pp. As we get further into summer we’re going to be launching our Bottomless Brunch on Sundays, so I think we’ll start in a few weeks which I’m really excited about.

Describe Moules A Go-Go in 3 words.

Atmosphere, smiles, mussels.

What do you do that’s different?

Apart from sourcing our mussels directly from Anglesey, we have a really great atmosphere. I’d say the number 1 thing we put out there is our service, I honestly feel it’s some of the best in Chester, our staff go above and beyond. We’re all really genuine here. Parts of the restaurant are available to hire out for parties or events, just give us a call to arrange and we’ll make it a great experience for you!

Favourite interior feature?

I think the pictures behind the bar are my favourite. They get a lot of attention, and people really like them. All of our decor has personal touches and a lot are from our travels. Depending on the type of crowd we have in, I’ve made tailored playlists to play and it gets people really excited when they hear songs they wouldn’t normally hear in a bar.

How can people go about making a booking with you?

So we prefer people to give us a call, it just makes it so much easier as we can tailor to your needs and it’s more personal. We do take bookings through our website too, if that’s easier for people. There’s no need to book if you wanted to walk in over lunch time and try our set priced menu, 2 courses for £12.50 or 3 for £15.50. I’d recommend our Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie, it’s to die for!
